Ghost in the Shell coming to IMAX theatres in 4K this September
The first IMAX theatres in the United States, Japan and Canada will show the Neo-Noir Cyberpunk thriller Ghost in the Shell on September 17. Bandai Distributors and Lionsgate announced Friday that Ghost in The Shell would be shown in 4K at around 150 locations using IMAX’s DMR digital remastering process.
Ghost in the Shell, which is based on the manga of the same title, takes place in 2029 Japan. It follows Motoko Kusanagi (a cyborg security agent) as she pursues a mysterious hacker. Mamoru Oshii directed the 1995 anime film. Although it initially failed at the box office, it became a cult favourite through home media releases. Recently, the movie got a 4K release for its 25th anniversary.
Ghost in the Shell has been adapted many times, including a controversial 2017 American live-action film that cast Scarlett Johansson and other white actors in lead roles. There is also a sequel series on Netflix, which picks up after the events of the 2002 anime series based on the manga.
