Paradox shared additional details regarding the AI enhancements coming to sci-fi grand strategy game Stellaris in the near and distant future. Since they are the key drivers of any expansion or conquest efforts, the team behind the game will primarily focus on the economy and pops.

While Stellaris’ AI performance has improved since patch3.2 was released, the developer did admit that it still struggles with specific areas, such as when you play as Void Dwellers.

“For instance, the AI still has issues when playing as Void Dwellers. They don’t know where to build habitats based on their needs. They don’t know where to build habitats on mining stations,” the developer wrote in today’s development diary.

They still have difficulties handling robots and slaves effectively, and sometimes the AI can still lead to an economic death spiral. They may also run out of food or consumer goods.

Paradox plans to improve Stellaris AI in the future. This includes making it more competitive in the late-game and mid-game.

It will stop trying to increase its monthly income at the moment and cease doing so once it reaches +500. This limit will be removed, and the system will scale infinitely.

It is also working to address its inability to specialize its planets and reorganize districts to suit its needs.

The AI is designed to behave like a player and build whatever it needs to colonize new planets. It will then look to organize districts on its planets to maximize the output of each one once it has settled down.

Stellaris’ AI is also susceptible to unique pops, especially when controlling multi-cultural planets with robots and slaves.

According to the developer, they can currently solve robots’ unemployment through the construction of research buildings that cannot work.

Paradox plans to encourage AI during its early colonization efforts to expand faster by prioritizing systems with planets.

It also intends to prevent death spirals from running out of food products.

The 3.3. patch was not intended to be so large, but on the AI side, we’re getting a lot traction now, they said. The idea was to bring the AI up to speed with the economy. Every other behavior is dependent on an empire’s economic prowess. We are now at a point where AI is performing well.

We might also see computer-controlled players prioritizing research and resources differently depending on their ideology in the future.

The linked dev diary contains more information about the changes. Here’s more information about Stellaris and when the patch may land.
