Every MCU Property Is Leading Up To Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
At this point in time, it feels increasingly like every MCU property is leading up to the next doctor StrangeMovie, titledDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is both a positive and a negative thing. It means that the movie will serve as the conclusion to many interconnected stories. However, it also places the movie in a difficult position of trying to satisfy the expectations of many fans.
Marvel has been known to gamble like this before with mixed results. It was easy to see that most solo movies in the first decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe were leading up to the four Avengers films. These team-ups were generally well-received by critics and fans alike. Yet, no other movie other than the team-ups has raised the same stakes as the second Doctor Strange movie. Captain America: Civil War was not the same movie. It featured many more MCU characters that fans will see in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness. And its main storyline was a civil war among the Avengers. This movie is a good example of what the second Doctor Strange movie should avoid.
In comparison to Doctor Strange’s Multiverse of Madness, the lead-up to Captain America: Civil War was almost non-existent. Yes, Tony and Steve had always been more antagonistic than the other Avengers. It’s difficult to say that this setup was a drag-down fight involving all the team and two completely different world views – the government.
It is also impossible to state that the next Avengers movies really paid off the emotional stakes of Captain America: Civil War. It’s not enough to have a handshake and some conversations in which Tony and Steve try to avoid getting emotionally involved. This is not just about character stakes. The setup for mistrust within the government has The Falcon and The Winter Soldier been left aside. It hasn’t really been explored much thereafter.
Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness can handle so much more. Loki has already proven the existence of the multiverse and has explained how it was created – or how it came back to be. This is especially important because Marvel aims to move beyond the heroes who have been at its core for the first ten years of its existence (like the aforementioned Tony Stark or Steve Rogers). It’s time to bring in a new generation and allow new properties to receive the MCU treatment. The Fantastic Four are waiting in the wings, thanks to the FOX merger. Even more important, the XMen are also available, which is the studio’s most recognizable property.
Marvel isn’t in a hurry to introduce these characters. Instead of using the possibility of them to introduce a concept that will multiply their storytelling possibilities: the multiverse. It’s two of its Disney+ series this year that are leading up to it. Wanda’s incredible power will prove to be instrumental in Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness. The WandaVision final post-credit scene gives a hint at why. Loki is another explanation of the multiverse. It allows us to visualise its creation and warns us about the implications for our future.
Wanda Maximoff has been confirmed to be a key player for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There have been reports that Loki will also appear in that movie. Another movie that’s expected to have multiverse consequences is Spider-Man : No Way Home. This movie, widely rumored, will explore the Spider-Verse, and show multiple Peter Parkers. All this aligns with Benedict Cumberbatch’s appearance as Doctor Strange in the third Spider-Man movie and Peter Parker’s existence as Peter Parker. Peter Parker was the only person who was likely to find himself lost in the multiverse because of a combination of bad luck and good intentions.
Consider what the multiverse is the future of MarvelThe amount of preparation required to make a movie that will explore the topic and establish the rules and storylines surrounding it makes sense.Loki, even more, Spider-Man has no way home they can have fun in the sandbox, but they aren’t the kind of properties that will give fans the answers they need. Marvel will, hopefully, remember its roots.Captain: America Civil WarMakes the first mistake and makes the second doctor Strange movie still, primarily, about doctor StrangeAs they set out to move forward,
Fans are excited about the team-up and for the potential possibilities. However, the movie must tread a fine line between focusing too much on the details and still allowing characters to shine. Each MCU property is now leading up to Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness. This means that there are many expectations.
